Tell a Story from your Childhood.

Tell a story from your childhood. Dig deep and try to be descriptive about what you remember and how you felt.
We moved a lot when I was a kid
I lived in eight houses by the time I was eighteen
Went to five different schools
Lived in a Castle and a Hotel

I get asked if I was a Military Brat
I was not
I was a Cop Brat

My dad worked for the CHP
California Highway Patrol for those of you who never watched CHiPs
and Yes he did ride a Motorcycle
And no he isn't as dreamy as Eric Estrada was

He got transferred a lot
Promoted a lot
All meant moves

On Mother's Day my Mom, kids and I were talking about the time we lived in a hotel for 3 months
I would love to say we lived in a swanky Marriott or Hilton
But, it was not
It was a Travelodge
One room for the four of us
I slept in the closet
My brother in the drawer
In my Mom's defense he was only four

Each time my Dad was transferred, he would move ahead of us and we would only see him on weekends.  We would go up to visit him, where ever it is that he lived or he would come home.  We were leaving San Diego for Sunnymead, California, which is now called Moreno Valley, a suburb of Riverside.  He was living in the Travelodge, it was circa 1977

I loved living in the Travelodge.  It was awesome for an eight year old!  We had maid service, a milkman brought our milk to us daily in jars, we had a POOL!!!

I remember it being hot as hell and all we did was sit in the room and swim, day in and day out.  We got to know the owners of the hotel and would go to the office and visit them.  At the time, the Travelodge was really big and not the cheesy motels they are now.  They had a mascot, Sleepy, the Bear and it was really cool to stay there.

Or at least my parents told us that
I was eight for God's sake!

Anyways, there are a few distinct memories I have from living in the hotel for those few months

My mom received a phone call one morning and dropped to the bed in tears
Being eight you have no idea really what is going on and how bad it can be
I just remember her being distraught
And crying a lot
Saying over and over, I cannot believe it
Is it true?

Elvis had died

Yes, people, THE Elvis Presley
To this date, my Mom has this odd fascination with him and vividly I remember her acting like a family member had passed
That is how much she loved him
and we just celebrated his the anniversary of his death this summer with my nephews

Don't ask.....

The other memory I have is of Sleepy the Bear
The Motel sold stuffed animals of him
and I wanted one so bad
But my parents lived on a tight budget
and this was way before the era of buying your kids love

I remember going to the office daily and looking at the bears

Every day
Something happened, and I do not remember what
But it was a good deed
And I remember the owner coming to our room and telling me I deserved Sleepy for my actions

I slept with that bear for years
He helped me get through a move
New School
New Friends
New Life

Favorite Photo of Me

A favorite photo of yourself and why

So many reasons I love this picture
I took it, on a day that PR'd my 5k
Sitting outside waiting on a friend
That at the time I really needed in my life
Even though it was brief, they made a huge difference
I just cut my bangs
It was New Years Day
A time to change
A time for hope

Something difficult about your "lot in life" and how you're working to overcome it

Something difficult about your "lot in life" and how you're working to overcome it

Being Alone
It is hard, especially in your 40's
Seriously hard....

My life is really full and I should not complain
I have great friends, family and still a man to support me

But I hate being alone
That is why I keep busy
Why I run
Why my schedule is always busting
The more I have on my plate the easier it is not to join the Pity Party
That is so easy to throw

Right now, at this time
I know my life is where it needs to be
As easy as it would be to fall right back to where I was a few years back
It is not right, at least now
For Me

So, I run, I workout
I keep my kids involved in sports, which keeps me busy
I make time to be with friends
And family

I won't say the cats, that would just make me pathetic
